The Transmission of Cultural Values via EFL Textbooks in China
In: Journal of educational media, memory, and society: JEMMS ; the journal of the Georg Eckert Institute for International Textbook Research, Band 8, Heft 2, S. 128-144
ISSN: 2041-6946
This article examines the cultural values conveyed via texts and illustrations in EFL (English as a foreign language) textbooks currently in use in China. The large number of cultural values represented include patriotism, respect, diligence, collectivism, and equitable gender roles. These show that the national curriculum has been implemented in EFL textbooks. At the same time, the "common sense" design of textbooks also reflects textbook editors' and writers' cultural values.

Amending Chinese copyright law to fulfil obligations under the Marrakesh treaty to facilitate access to published works for the print disabled
In: The China quarterly, Band 240, S. 1066-1086
ISSN: 1468-2648
Chinese copyright laws have not yet given sufficient consideration to copyright exceptions or limitations to facilitate access to copyright works for persons with a print disability. Now that China has become a signatory party of the Marrakesh Treaty to Facilitate Access to Published Works for Persons Who Are Blind, Visually Impaired or Otherwise Print Disabled, it would be significant if China could amend its copyright laws so as to end the "book famine" for a huge population with a print disability. The objective of this paper is to evaluate the effectiveness of Chinese copyright exceptions for the print disabled and propose amendment options for China's copyright law to ensure compliance with its signatory obligations. To this end, the paper provides an overarching examination of China's copyright exception arrangements for the print disabled, identifies the gap between Chinese copyright laws and the Marrakesh Treaty, and analyses previous proposals on copyright law reform. Beauty May Not Be Effective: The Effects of Imaginative Display on Green Product Evaluation
In: The journal of environment & development: a review of international policy
ISSN: 1552-5465
Even though imaginative displays are an essential determinant for improving product evaluations in traditional products, there is little research on imaginative displays in the display of green products. Therefore, this article addresses this gap by examining the imaginative display of green products. Three studies show that relative to imaginative displays (i.e., novel and esthetics), standard displays (i.e., non-novel and neutral esthetics) increase green product evaluations, suggesting that imaginative displays positively affect traditional products but are unsuitable for green products. In addition, standard displays (vs. imaginative displays) increase product evaluations for altruistic green products. In contrast, imaginative displays (vs. standard displays) increase product evaluations for egoistic green products. The article aims to change the practice of wasting space resources for displaying green products. More critically, the article raises new insight for policymakers and merchants to achieve sustainable green consumption.

Evaluation of a Sexual Abuse Prevention Education for Chinese Preschoolers
In: Research on social work practice, Band 24, Heft 4, S. 428-436
ISSN: 1552-7581
Objectives: The purpose of this study was to test the feasibility of a sexual abuse prevention education in a sample of Chinese preschool children in Beijing, China. Method: One hundred and fifty preschool children were randomly assigned to either the intervention group ( N = 78) or the wait-list control group ( N = 72). Children were posttested on sexual abuse prevention knowledge and self-protection skills gains. Results: Following program participation, preschool children in the intervention group demonstrated greater knowledge about sexual abuse prevention and higher levels of self-protection skills compared with children in the wait-list control group. Conclusions: Findings suggest that it is feasible to implement the sexual abuse prevention education with Chinese preschoolers. Applications and limitations of these findings are discussed.
